I.T is coming full circle. What do we mean by this? Well if your old enough to cast your mind back 15 years everything was centralised and all that existed on the Desktop was a "dumb terminal". These dumb terminals were just that, thay had little or no intelligence, were easy to manage and had a relatively long shelf-life.

Things changed in the early to mid-90's with the rise of the Personal Computer or PC as it is commonly known as. PC's were, in contrast to dumb terminals , much more difficult to manage at every level. They present security risks during their lifcycle as well as on retirement - with internal disk drives needing to be formatted on retirement which can be extremely time consuming for large PC estates.

In the last 2 years with the rise of Desktop Virtualisation things are now coming full circle and we are now able to offer customers the option of either re-using their existing PC as a dumb terminal or as PC's come up for refresh using Thin Clients from Manufacturers such as Wyse, Chip PC and Igel. As well as being much easier to manage and administrate than PC's, Thin Clients have the added advantage of having extremely small Power Supplies - typically 10Watts, as opposed to PC's which consume as much as 300 Watts per PC. Over a period of a year the electricty and carbon savings really start to add up.....

Once you have Virtualised your desktops (or a subset of them) you can then access these securely and efficiently from any web browser - making your I.T available where ever you have a web presence, which is an aid to business continuity.
